Welcome to the first edition of “Toddler Tuesdays”, a monthly newsletter that focuses on child development and how to best support our tiniest tots! This month, we’re focusing on a topic that’s near and dear to many toddlers’ hearts—their sensitive period for order. You may have noticed children lining up toys, sorting items by color, or insisting things be placed in a particular way. This is all part of their developmental need for order, and it's a key aspect of how toddlers make sense of the world around them.
In the Montessori approach, the sensitive period for order typically occurs between ages 1 and 4. During this time, children crave consistency, predictability, and routine. Their desire to line things up, group objects by size or color, and return items to their proper places reflects their need to understand their environment and feel secure within it. It might look like play, but when a toddler carefully arranges blocks in a line or matches colors, they’re building essential cognitive skills. This focus on order helps toddlers develop concentration, logical thinking, and spatial awareness. To support this sensitive period, you can create activities that encourage your child’s love for organizing and categorizing. Simple tasks like sorting laundry by color, arranging utensils in the kitchen, or matching socks are great ways to engage their need for order. You can also provide materials like color-matching games, stacking toys, or puzzles that challenge them to put things in their proper places. These activities not only fulfill their desire for order but also help develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving abilities.
It’s natural to wonder why your child insists on lining up cars or why they might get upset when things are moved out of place. By recognizing and respecting their need for order, you’re offering them the security and comfort they need to thrive during this important developmental stage. So, next time you see your toddler arranging their toys in a straight line, give them a smile and know they’re right where they need to be!
